Discover the Voice of the Veena
The Veena is one of the most important instruments of the Carnatic music tradition and one of the oldest string instruments associated with Indian music.
With its distinctive resonant body and four main playing strings, the Veena is particularly suited to expressing the melodic nuances and ornamentation that are central to Carnatic music.
Unlike instruments where pitch is fixed to individual keys or frets, the Veena allows the musician to shape and move between notes through the fingers. This makes it possible to explore the subtle pitch movements, slides and gamakas that give Carnatic music its characteristic sound.
Learning the Veena is therefore not simply about learning an instrument. It is a way of developing a deeper understanding of melody, pitch, rhythm and musical expression.
The course introduces students progressively to the Veena and to the musical principles of Carnatic music.
Students work with:
Instrument Technique · Svara · Śruti · Gamaka · Tāla · Rāga · Repertoire
Beginning with posture, instrument handling and the production of clear notes, students gradually develop the coordination and control needed to play melodic passages and compositions.
As technique develops, students are introduced to the characteristic movements and ornamentations of Carnatic music, learning to approach the Veena not simply as a sequence of notes, but as an expressive melodic instrument.
Students progressively develop:
Correct posture and handling of the instrument
Plucking and basic right-hand technique
Left-hand technique and pitch control
Svara and śruti awareness
Movement between notes and basic gamakas
Coordination between both hands
Tāla and rhythmic awareness
Introduction to rāga
Carnatic compositions and repertoire
Listening and musical expression
The pace and repertoire will be adapted according to the student's level and experience.

No. Beginners can start with the fundamentals of the instrument and Carnatic music.

No. Carnatic music and basic vocal training is a part of the course and terminology are introduced progressively throughout the course.
Do I need to own a Veena?

No. Initially the instrument will be provided by the teacher and shared with other students. Eventually based on the teacher's guidance and student's interest, it can be purchased

Like any musical instrument, learning Veena requires regular practice. The instrument has its own physical technique, but beginners are introduced to it progressively.
Can I learn Veena if I already sing Carnatic music?

Yes. Previous Carnatic vocal training can be very helpful, particularly for developing pitch and understanding rāga, but it is not required.
